In the field, soil colors are supposed to be measured at noon in bright sunlight. Anything else related to sun angle, cloudiness, or pollution tends to produce redder hues. Those variations are virtually eliminated by the Capsure tool, which supplies its own light source. This works as long as the surface being examined is perfectly flat. Otherwise, ambient light can interfere. Dry peds work fine, but too-moist peds tend to stick to the 1-cm lens opening, which may require frequent cleaning. Field moist samples, which should be used instead, give much less trouble. The Capsure gives you a choice of three aperture widths (2 mm, 4 mm, and 8 mm), which allows one to get separate colors for mottles. Also, remember that Munsell chips tend to fade in the light, resulting in mostly lower chromas. You might need to replace those old chips. I tested the colorimeter on brand new 7.5YR and 10YR Munsell charts and found exact color matches with the colorimeter. Looks like the Capsure is a winner.
