I bought this shovel around 15 years ago, with the fiberglass handle, and planted around 3,000 second year trees-transplants? Mostly Doug fir and western hemlock, and some western red cedar. That's not a lot of trees, but I worked the shovel hard. The shovel is built so as to allow some tough usage; you can really pull on the handle to enlarge a hole with no worry about the handle cracking or breaking. The hard rubber pads are attached to the shovel with threaded fasteners to an attaching point that is welded on. A real pro tool for forestry!

I have purchased this shovel before and loved it. I still love the head of this shovel. It is solidly built and very substantial. However, I purchased this shovel a few months ago with the wooden handle, and the handle broke right at the connection to the shovel head the second time I used it. I was not applying any undue stress to it, and the break was a clean, straight break across the handle, no splintering or other cracking, just a smooth, clean break. I'm not sure what happened, but the wooden handle seems to be very subpar. Now I will need to buy a replacement handle.
