Silky Katanaboy Folding Saws

While a "chainsaw replacement" is a little too optimistic. This saw is still a really great and lightweight option, for cutting a lot of wood where you wouldn't want the weight or hassle of a chainsaw. I've used it to girdle large trees, prune branches above my head, and even on a couple of wildland fire assignments to clear woody debris without having to hike back to the engine to get the chainsaw. It's not cheap, but the quality is excellent like all Silky saws. I understand the need for the screw on the safety catch, but it is a little annoying to have to screw/unscrew it every time you want to fold or unfold the saw.

I have had two Katanaboy saws. They are top of the line saws. They are so sharp that it is difficult to start drawing the saw especially on the undercuts of logs. This saw is perfect for remote areas where you want less weight than a chainsaw. I have also found it fantastic for limbing trees. The handle and blade are so long you can reach high branches faily easily. The Katanaboy has its limitations however. The length of the saw can be quite cumbersome when making cuts close to the ground. It also will not be faster than a chainsaw. Consider how much cutting will be required. Also consider getting a Zubat for the smaller (<3inches) cuts. The Katanaboy and Zubat combination will cover all your occasional cutting needs except for felling large trees.

This saw is simply amazing. It is the perfect saw for trail maintenance because it can efficiently cut very large tree trunks while still being packable, lightweight and durable. I used to think I needed a chainsaw, but now with this saw I am able to cut trunks of 12" and more in minutes. The blade is super sharp and durable. The closure safety mechanism is simple and reliable. I like that this saw comes with a sturdy canvas bag that can be slung over the shoulder while hiking into remote areas. I wish I had discovered this saw sooner.
