Description

AMS Bulk Density Soil Sampling Mini Kit

This mini kit includes a core sampler cup, a core sampler cap, 15 2˝ x 2˝ stainless steel rings, 30 2˝ plastic end caps, and an aluminum carrying case with foam inserts. Each soil sample ring is constructed of .062w SST tubing, is ideal for collecting undisturbed core samples, and has a volume of 90.59 cubic centimeters. The bulk density of a soil sample can be calculated using this known volume and the weight of the sample liner. The core sampler cap features a built-in waste barrel that offers 2˝ of relief and helps to eliminate both compaction from overdriving the sampler and the need to load multiple rings inside the sampler. The core sampler cap is equipped with a 5/8˝ NC male threaded connection for adding extension rods, a hammer head cross handle, or a compact slide hammer attachment (sold separately).

This is a wonderful kit for soil bulk density sampling, I have used it successfully in a wide variety of soil types. It can be a little tricky in sandy soils and Histosols, and you definitely need the slide hammer for clayey Alfisols or Ultisols (don't think a mallet will cut it), but it works great overall. The model number seems to be the same, but the current version has some improvements over the older ones. The inner sleeve liner is longer than it used to be and makes it easier to overdrive the sampler without compacting it, so you can just trim the excess off outside of the rings. I have several of these.
