Description

Agratronix Soil Compaction Tester Model 08180

Quickly determine the extent of subsurface soil compaction with this tester! A color-coded, stainless steel dial indicates if growing conditions are good (green), fair (yellow), or poor (red). The dial is liquid-filled to reduce shock. The tester features a durable molded housing, rubber hand grips, and a 24” stainless steel rod with an adjustable shock collar that guards against damage during transport or storage. Two tips are included (1/2” tip for firm soil and 3/4” tip for soft soil) and store conveniently in the tester housing.

I found the soil compaction tester easy to use. Most of the time, I use the small tip because my soil is quite compact. To ensure I don't lose the tip, I check that it is tight before I test the compaction. The tester is fairly lightweight.

This probe works well and is easy to use, easy to read. One minor caution - the smaller probe tip is machined in such a way that it is very thin between the bottom of the threaded hole and the tapered exterior, which means relatively little external wear (happens every time you insert the probe into the soil) results in breakage. So, keep an extra tip on hand. It's very easy to replace.

This is simple to use and provides a great basis of evaluating soil compaction at various soil depths in relation to growing turf or other plant materials. A good tool for use on a sports field.
