Jim-Gem KBC Planting Bar
Works best in rocky soil that is difficult to penetrate. The KBC bar will penetrate soil cleanly and easily allowing less dirt to fall in the planting hole. Bar is 39” long. Blade is 4”W x 12”L, 1” thick at top, tapering to a point. Features a cast blade of special alloy steel. Blade and footstep are cast as one piece so footstep won’t break or bend, even under heavy use. Blade “spike” fits into handle to form reinforced joint. Strong weld at handle and blade joint.

My son and I planted 200 seedlings last weekend with the Jim-Gem and found it to be much easier than when we planted the same number last year with a spade. The tapered tip creates a slightly wider hole than a flat blade. The little bit of extra weight makes pushing it into soil easier than a standard garden spade. It's worth every dollar if you plan to plant more than 20 trees and is built tough enough that you will pass it down to your grandchildren.
The bar is very well made, but I am 6' 1'' tall and I wish the bar was about 2" longer.
I bought this in the hope that it would make planting small bare root trees in western Arkansas easier. My land is in the foot hills of the Ouachita mountains. Lots of broken loose shale gravel in the soil. My hopes were dashed. It was unable to penetrate the soil at all. I used a pick axe this weekend to plant 50 bare root white pine seedlings. Tough job. In retrospect I doubt this item would work in less rocky soil any better than a standard planting bar because the blade is very thick.
