Purchased this axe as a replacement for one that was borrowed and returned in damaged condition. It's a little bit pricey but very well constructed from first class components. Fit and finish are superb. The blade was very nicely sharpened out of the box, although I always "touch up" and condition new edges, this one needed very little attention. If luck is with me, this axe will be a long lasting investment and a pleasure to use.
After receiving and unboxing my new Velvicut Bad Boy's Axe I inspected it closely before putting it to work. The head grind is even and balanced and the edge i well honed. It's mounted rock solid dead center of the haft. All six of our CT axe hafts are grade A, but I'll rate this one AA. The tight vertical grain has NO runout. They're shape is old school; narrow and thin, not the clubs of the Swedish and German axes. With the flex and resilience minimal shock is felt making them a pleasure to work with longer. So, I put it to work chopping a fresh cut 10" fir log. It consistently bites three fingers deep and is easily removed. It's the only axe I have that I didn't need to spend hours on sharpening. It's sharp out of the box. This Boy's Axe is for Big Boys, too. The welted leather head sheath is very high quality as well.
Unlike cheaper axes, including the junk found at big box stores, this axe comes with a nicely honed edge. It's very sharp out of the box. The head is hung very well and the grain of the handle is aligned right where it should be. Balance is nice too. This axe is very well made - I'm impressed. It will complement my large Pulaski and my smaller hatchet in the tool box of my forestry field rig.
