Energizer Lithium Battery, CR2, 3V, Single

Affordable and rugged, this precision rangefinder/hypsometer provides accurate range, height, and angle measurements. First Target Priority Mode allows you to range small objects and obtain an instant reading. Distant Target Priority Mode displays the range to the farthest target among the targets measured. The Forestry 550 features 6x magnification and provides several measurement readout options including actual distance, angle compensated distance (horizontal distance), angle (degrees), and height. Results are displayed in yards, meters, or feet. Featuring both an internal display and an external LCD display, reading the measurement data is easy. The Forestry 550 is waterproof and comes complete with a field case, quick start guide, and battery.

The hypsometer only works if you can get a clear shot to the base of the tree and top of tree. So if you have any kind of understory or midstory vegetation where you are measuring tree heights this piece of equipment is worthless. Out in the open it works fine.

This rangefinder works great as a hypsometer... if you have about 10 trees per acre that is. It is a very good instrument and I WOULD have given it an excellent rating except for one thing: the thing was set up to calculate heights by using the length of sides of the triangle rather than the elevation angle and horizontal distance. Therefore, you actually need to acquire the top of a tree unimpeded. How often can you do this? And there's no reason for it to be set up that way because it has a perfectly good internal clinometer. It gives very accurate elevation angles. Why the engineering team involved with this chose to use length of sides to determine lenth (height) of third side I don't know... it absolutely baffles me. Other than this (in my view fatal) flaw, it is great... compact, accurate, weatherproof, durable, acceptable battery life (although the gauge is hokey), and on the distant target setting it is superior to my Impulse 200 XL (a $2500.00 instrument) at shooting in brush. NIKON & Forestry Suppliers: PLEASE!! fix this flaw and I'll buy several of these. Until then, I only use the one I have as a backup/emergency instrument. Foresters who work in relatively open-grown stands will probably like it fine.

Purchased this in Sept 08. A couple dozen days in the field. Little to no problems. Great battery life. This is how it works. 1.) Hgt. mode: Takes one reading, shoot the top... then you need to add or subtract manually , your eye level at the bole. example: If your on level ground, and you shoot the top, Add 5-6 feet to the reading. 2.) Hgt. (flashing) mode: Take two readings, top then base... your height instantly computed. (I prefer this mode) 3.) Actual distance: Distance, corrects for angle. 4.) Horizontal distance: Distance, NOT corrected for angle. 5.) Angle: angle in degrees, I believe. THINGS I like: --Its affordable! --Zoom allows to penetrate easily holes in foliage, you can reliably shoot through openings as small as 2'x2' --Fast readings, shoot the top, then shoot the bottom... Or, if your on level ground just shoot the tops and add 5' --Feels durable, rubberized case, "Waterproof" DETRACTORS, Problems etc: --You need to actually hit the the top bud of the tree, and the base... So you need clear LOS through foliage/grass. At times I miss the old 3 step systems in previous Hypsometers. --In thick fog/mist I cannot get good readings unless I have backed up 80+ feet,,, even then I doubt the accuracy. (Other lasers have the same problem) --The battery cover can loosen and fall off... I was lucky and found it. I now wrap electrical tape around the unit and over the cover to prevent this very likely disaster. --Made in China, Questionable quality control on circuit boards, tilt sensors etc... Only time will tell. OVERALL - I like it alot. I have high confidence in its readings. It feels like I will be using it for years.

It's a Great unit. I can use one set instead of two. It's a professional unit. Does a great job. Helps me in communication system installation.
