The Gram stain utilizes differences in bacterial cell morphology which result in staining of bacteria as pink (negative) or blue (positive). Based on the color of staining, the correct antibiotics can be prescribed by a physician to fight human infections. This experiment will allow students to perform a partial Gram stain. A microscope with 100X magnification is required to view complete bacterial morphology. Kit includes: Safe microorganisms, Crystal Violet Gram stain, Iodine substitute, Bacterial growth medium, Plastic troughs, Sterile transfer pipets, Microtip transfer pipets, sterile swabs and microscope slides, content background, experiment procedures, safety information and assessment questions and answers.
