I am a outdoors backpacker and camper.

Times have changed. My first Silva Ranger was made in Sweden, and worked for 20 years without a hitch until it was stolen. I got this Ranger to replace it. The dial was so loose it would not keep a compass bearing locked in reliably. It then developed a large bubble. The new Silvas are not Swedish-made but come from Indonesia. I will not be getting another.

They have changed back to the old style bezel and mirror. Every silva is guaranteed for life. They sent me a new one apparently just like the one that gave me 30 years of great service. I'm happy.

Almost word for word with Mr Bockman except all the liquid leaked out of mine. Had my old one since the 70's.

Mine also developed a bubble in the liquid and no longer works. I am not sure how common this issue is.

I have used the Silva Type 15 for around 30 years and had real good success with that model. I have used this model(515) since I could no longer find the Type 15 and have been very disappointed with this newer model. The last two developed bubbles in the liquid. I also do not like the split mirror as well as the line down the mirror. I am about to order my first non-Silva compass in over 35 years. I am leaning towards the Brunton Original 15 and I am interested in seeing how it holds up. Wished I could still the Silva Type 15; would never switch from this model if it was still available.

We use these compasses for our Search and Rescue Team, they are the only compasses that will hold up under all extreme working conditions from 110 degree heat to sub zero conditions. Also very accurate for plotting and bearing sighting.

Forester

Bought a couple of these units for new foresters starting. Not a great compass for running property lines due to the split mirror. The older models had a line down the middle of the mirror which worked well for sighting. We switched to Suunto and Brunton because of this. Otherwise a good compass....

I bought my first Silva Ranger compass when I started forestry school over 50 years ago and have been using them ever since. It is the only compass that I will use.

I've used a Silva 15Q for over 30 years for following survey plans in the woods. It's great. I'm changing over to a GPS unit now, and I'll miss using this.
